Floor heating pipe cast into main concrete slab

The velta classic 20 system is currently being installed in a five schools project for Redcar and Cleveland in North East England. Mechanical services contractor N G Bailey worked with consultants White Young Green & Partners and main contractor Mowlem to specify the velta classic 20 system for this major PFI project.

When completed, the Education Authority will have five new schools with floor heating throughout. This will include three multi-storey secondary schools / colleges and two single storey primary schools, in total they will include 27,000sq m of
velta classic system.

Contractor Mowlem was particularly attracted to the classic system because the floor heating pipe is cast into the main concrete slab rather than requiring an additional screed on top.

Mick Kitson, velta’s project manager says that velta has been involved from the design stage and is currently completing the installation of pipework and manifolds as the programme rolls on. He says, “we worked with all the parties to ensure the fastest possible building programme. A key feature of this project has been our ability to work within the tight programme of concrete slab pours and to be out of the way for other internal trades to work on the floor as quick as possible”.

The velta classic system has been designed for use with sand cement screeds and concrete slab applications, it has been developed to provide the perfect solution, utilising both 17 and 20mm velta PE-Xa sizes for most types of building in both new and refurb applications.

School uses ground water for heating and cooling

The velta contec system has been built into a recently completed school project in Holland. A total of 14,600sq m of velta contec provides heating or cooling for the Harlemmermeer Lyceum at Hoofddorp near Rotterdam. In a remarkable piece of good fortune the school is built over an underground aquifer which contains both hot and cold strata at different levels. The school uses renewable energy source to power its heating and cooling system.

The velta contec pipe system is connected via a network of manifolds to the school’s mono-well, which utilises ground water from either the hot stratum or the cold stratum to pass over a plate heat exchanger and satisfy the heating and cooling requirements of the school and library.

The construction comprised two major phases; 12,000sq m floor area for the school and 2,600sq m for the library. for certain parts of the construction the velta contec core activation system pipes were placed in pre-cast concrete sections and for other parts the velta pipes were located as concrete slabs were cast in-situ.

Gerald Kemp, velta UK Managing Director, comments, I have visited this project recently and was impressed, not only by the simplicity of the pumped ground water system, but also by the project’s active solar shading panels and feature acoustic panels. I think it could be a great reference project for similar schemes in the UK. The environment within the school in summer was very pleasant and the weather in Holland has a similar profile to that of the UK”.

The system has a high degree of self-regulation and operates successfully without the requirement for individual room thermostats…a significant saving!

At a new apartments project on Miller Street in Hamilton, mechanical contractor G. McAusland & Co Ltd is well advanced with the installation of 1600sq m of velta tecto 2 flowing screed system for client Kelvin Homes. McAusland has previously worked with velta on housing projects and a church refurbishment and was impressed with the whole velta package of support from planning through installation to commissioning. Ivan worked with McAusland to change the Miller Street specification from sand and cement screed to flowing screed to provide a thinner solution and to meet the client’s tight schedule.

velta announces new minitec system   velta launches new DVDs

velta has launched a mini system with a massive future. The new velta minitec system is a low profile pipe and screed system for refurbishment applications. At just 15mm deep the velta minitec system can be used as a heating and cooling system in almost any refurbishment application.

Please find more details in the systems section.

velta is currently producing a new DVD for installers and interested specifiers. On the menu will be a guide to the new velta minitec system, a new video outlining the updated velta tecto 2 system, and a clear guide to installing the proven velta provario click-fit manifold system.

Also, velta have just launched the DVD for the velta contec system – Concrete Core Activation. If you would like a copy please click here
